Countries around the world with a large number of immigrant students are gradually reducing the approval of new student visas. Recently, Australia limited the intake of international students, and now Canada has followed the same route.

To reduce the number of temporary residents in the country, Canada decided to restrict student visas by 35% this year and cut down a further 10% in the next year.

Announcing the same on social media platform X, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted, “We’re granting 35% fewer international student permits this year. And next year, that number’s going down by another 10%.”

“Immigration is an advantage for our economy – but when bad actors abuse the system and take advantage of students, we crack down,” he further added.

According to the official reports, Canada approved 5,09,390 student permits in 2023 and 1,75,920 in the first seven months of 2024. As per the new rules, the number of student permits may be reduced to 4,37,000 in 2025.

This decision will severely impact Indian students who are planning to go to Canada. Canada is one of the top destinations for Indian students for higher students.
