Canada Looking for Indian PM?

Justin Trudeau finally stepped down as the Canadian PM following his declining popularity and internal conflicts in the Liberal Party. As the party elects its new leader, two Indians stand a chance to be the new PM of the country.

Anita Anand and George Chahal are the two names floating among the candidates who have Indian roots. While they might not be the frontrunners, both of them offer a promising resume and have the potential to succeed Trudeau.

Anand, a former Defense Minister and now Transport Minister, stands a slightly better chance than her companion. She gained respect for her work during the COVID-19 pandemic, and her roots in Tamil Nadu and Punjab make her a favorite among the Indian-Canadian community.

On the other hand, there’s George Chahal, a Liberal MP from Alberta who’s been critical of Trudeau. His strong ties to Calgary’s diverse community could help him stand out but he’ll need to show he can do more than just be a harsh critic.

Only time will tell if Trudeau’s resignation can turn the tide for the Liberal Party in the upcoming elections in October 2025. Moreover, it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for Canada and the Indian diaspora as the political climate becomes more uncertain in the country.
