Canada, a country that was once a haven for immigrants has suddenly turned on its head with Justin Trudeau’s new policies. Indians aren’t relieved from these either as they also face the repercussions of rising political tensions between the two countries.
In a recent statistic, it is revealed that Canada is denying visas and entry to foreign travelers in record numbers. In the first seven months of 2024, they have repatriated travelers with an average of 3,727 per month, up 20 percent from last year. On top of that, there has been a significant decline in the number of study and work permits issued to foreigners.

Indians comprising the largest part of the immigrant population are facing the major consequences of these curbs. Ever since Canada alleged India’s involvement in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar the relation has been on a decline. And it is only deteriorating with Trudeau’s recent curb on immigration.
As the Canadian elections are also on the horizon, these new policies seem politically motivated. The locals have complained about the immigrants midst of the rising population and high housing prices. Hence, Trudeau, amid the increasing danger of losing upcoming elections, seems to pander to the public and garner some support from them.
