Sleep, a crucial metabolic process, is extremely essential for overall well-being. This is why people who struggle to get a good night’s sleep are always looking for remedies that will help them meet their daily sleep requirements. As such, when we came across a social media post claiming that one clove of garlic can make a world of difference, we wanted to learn more.
So, can having raw garlic enhance metabolism, sleep quality, and fat burning? Yes, said clinical dietitian Garima Goyal. “Consuming raw garlic daily — especially chewing it before sleep for 21 days — can potentially enhance various aspects of health. But it’s important to understand its benefits and potential drawbacks,” she told indianexpress.com.
Benefits
Antimicrobial properties – Garlic contains potent antimicrobial agents, particularly allicin, which is released when garlic is crushed or chopped. “Allicin has been shown to have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties, making garlic an effective natural remedy for infections. Regular consumption can help the body fend off common pathogens and support overall immune health,” said Goyal.
Cardiovascular health – One of the most well-documented benefits of garlic is its positive effect on heart health. “Garlic’s ability to improve lipid profiles and reduce hypertension is attributed to its sulfur-containing compounds and antioxidants,” said Goyal.
Antioxidant effects – Garlic is rich in antioxidants that help protect the body from oxidative stress and free radical damage. The antioxidant properties of garlic can also contribute to slower ageing and improved longevity, shared Goyal.
Potential drawbacks
Digestive issues – While garlic is generally safe for consumption, eating it raw can cause gastrointestinal discomfort in some individuals. “Symptoms such as heartburn, gas, and nausea are common, especially when consumed in large amounts. It’s advisable to start with small quantities and observe how your body reacts,” said Goyal.
Interaction with medications – Garlic has blood-thinning properties, which can enhance the effects of anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications. “This interaction can increase the risk of bleeding and should be considered by individuals taking such medications. Consulting with a healthcare provider before incorporating large amounts of garlic into the diet is recommended, particularly for those on medication,” said Goyal.
Odour – One of the most noticeable effects of consuming raw garlic is the strong odour it imparts to the breath and body odour. “This is due to the sulfur compounds in garlic. While this may be a minor issue for some, it can be significant enough to discourage regular consumption,” said Goyal.
So, does chewing on one garlic before sleep help?
According to Goyal, “there is no specific scientific evidence” suggesting that consuming garlic before sleep offers additional benefits compared to other times of the day. “The most important factor is consistent consumption, 21 days or more. Incorporating garlic into daily meals can ensure regular intake of its beneficial compounds,” said Goyal.
