US presidential elections are inching closer and the race between the two parties is tighter than ever. While earlier trends show a narrow lead to Kamala Harris it can still tilt towards any side on the election day. In such a climate truly every vote matters and communities are taking steps to spread awareness for the upcoming elections.

The Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora (FIIDS) has also launched the “Indo-American Votes Matter” campaign to make the community aware of their critical role in determining the next US president. Immigrant votes are crucial as they will not only vote based on national policies but also based on immigrant and global policies as well.

What is more interesting is that a similar campaign is launched by local Indian American communities in various states showing their support for Kamala Harris. The “Indian Americans for Harris” campaign, launched on Tuesday, is aimed at the grassroots level to gain more votes for the Democratic presidential candidate. While you would think the Indian-American voters would choose one of their ilk as the president the picture is not so clear.

More importantly, what these campaigns highlight is the strength of the Indian diaspora in America. Many people in the community are proud supporters of Harris and believe that an Indian-American woman at the helm of the country will not only bring them pride but also help them voice out their opinions with more authority. Will there be any campaign from the Republicans targeting the Indian community? Only time will tell but it will be a close fight between Harris and Trump.
