‘I think I played great’

Coco Gauff reflected on her ‘tough’ match with Ekaterina Alexandrova but believed she brought some great tennis to the court.

She said: “Yeah, it was tough. Obviously the first set, the whole match really, I played well. She stepped up her game in the second [set].

“Some balls I thought I’d hit a good shot but she’d hit a winner on the line and if she wins like that I can keep my head up high. Overall I thought I played great.”

Alexandrova 0-6 5-7 Gauff

Gauff needs to hold serve to win. In the first rally she’s put on the defensive but a backhand to the baseline changes that.

The Russian responds with a forehand down the line and lands it in play! 15-15.

An error from Alexandrova nudges Gauff back into the lead and the American moves 40-15 ahead with a blistering serve out wide.

Two match point opportunities for her here.

The first goes begging after a wide backhand is fizzed too far across the court.

The second is taken! Alexandrova goes wide off the serve and Coco Gauff wins in straight sets!

Alexandrova 0-6 5-4 Gauff*

Brilliant from Alexandrova. Powerful and accurate.

Her forehand, and the power she is getting from it, is troubling Gauff and forcing more errors.

The Russian holds serve to 30 and her level is increasing all the time.
