C.N. Mohanan was re-elected as the secretary of the Ernakulam district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) here on Monday (January 27, 2025).
He was unanimously elected to the post at the end of the three-day Ernakulam district meet of the party. He was first elected as district secretary in 2018. Mr. Mohanan had worked as State president of the Democratic Youth Federation of India from 1994 to 2000.
He was area secretary of the party at Kolencherry from 2000 to 2005. He was elected to the State committee in 2012 and had also served as chairperson of the Greater Cochin Development Authority.
The meeting also elected the 46-member Ernakulam district committee, which included 11 new faces and six women. The new members included C. Mani, K. J Maxi, C. N Sundaran, P. Vasudevan, K. K Elias, K. A Joy, T. V Nidhin, K. V Manoj, Shiji Sivaji, A. R Renjith, and Aneesh M. Mathew. Six among the 46 are women. Mr. Sundaran returned to the district committee after he was suspended in September 2021 for the alleged lapses in the election campaign of M. Swaraj, the party candidate in Thripunithura Assembly constituency.
Mr. Mohanan said that the party has gained strength organisationally and electorally since its previous district committee meeting held in December 2021. He rejected media reports that the party State secretary M. V Govindan had blamed the district-level leaders for deviating from the ideological position and getting caught in practices that were against the party norms.
