    BRICS group strengthens global south representation with five new member nations | International


    The BRICS group is broadening its membership, resulting in a simultaneous expansion of its influence. It is solidifying its position as the representative voice of the Global South. On January 1, 2024, five major countries—Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Ethiopia—will formally join the bloc. Previously, BRICS comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In November, Pakistan formally applied for membership in the BRICS grouping. Additionally, other nations expressing interest in joining the bloc include Nigeria, Turkey, Mexico, and Iraq.
