BBMP plans to deploy bandicoot robots to clean clogged drains in Bengaluru

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is considering the use of bandicoot robots —machines designed to clean clogged drains. The technology, already in use in Chennai, aims to eliminate manual scavenging and improve efficiency in drain maintenance.

BBMP Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao, following a review meeting on ongoing civic projects, said: “We are planning to experiment with new technology to clean drains that contribute to flooding. Bandicoot robots were used in Chennai, and we may explore using a similar system to assess its effectiveness.”

These semi-autonomous robots are developed to navigate through narrow drain lines, sucking out debris and waste. “The BBMP needs to evaluate the functionality of this technology,” the official said. However the officials have not shared the cost details of the technology. The robots operate remotely, similar to drone technology.

Mr. Rao also said that the ongoing cleanliness drive — launched on April 22 under the direction of Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar — will be extended. Initially planned for 10 days, the campaign will now continue for about a month, focusing on high-density areas such as bus stands, railway stations, and other public zones. So far, the BBMP has cleared 90% of major black spots across the city, Mr. Rao said, adding that the the BBMP is relentlessly working towards making the city look neat and clean.

In preparation for the monsoon, the BBMP has identified 209 flood-prone zones. Officials have been directed to implement flood mitigation measures, and traffic police have been asked to assist in identifying flooded roads. As part of road maintenance, the BBMP has repaired 245 out of 812 identified potholes. Mr. Rao said the citizens can register complaints about potholes and pothole filling is a dynamic process.
