Asian Games 2023 Live Updates Day 12: Saurav Ghosal wins silver in squash; wrestler Antim takes bronze

The Indian climbers began their campaign in boulder and lead events by advancing to the semifinals of the Asian Games. Aman Verma secured the eighth spot with a combined score of 118.8 in the men’s qualification match. Bharath Stephen Kamath Pereira came 13th with a combined score of 97.8 (69.7 in boulder and 28.1 in lead). Sport climbing was introduced at the Jakarta Asian Games in 2018.

India’s Mansi was up against Uzbekistan’s Laylokhon Sobirova in the women’s 57kg bronze medal match at the Asian Games. Sobirova earned a comfortable win over Mansi. India and Mansi miss out on a bronze medal!

India’s men’s team has upstaged Vietnam 2.5-1.5 and Arjun Erigaisi is the sole winner from the recently concluded contest. Arjun was the sole winner while other players managed to end their games level-pegging. Indian women’s team played a 2-2 draw with Kazakhstan.

Antim takes home a bronze for India. She gets the better of Ochir Bolortuya in the women’s wrestling freestyle 53 kg match at the Asian Games. Antim earned a win over Bolortuyaa of Mongolia by points 3-1 in the women’s 53kg tie.

A stunning comeback from Eain Yow in the ongoing contest as the Malaysian squash player has restored parity.

WHAT A COMEBACK BY THE INDIAN WOMEN HERE!

They lost Set 1, 8-21. Trailing 0-1 against hosts China, they fought back brilliantly. The Indians won 21-17 in Set 2, followed a thrilling 21-15 victory in Set 3, claiming a 2-1 win.

India lose the first set 21-23 vs Phillipines in their sepaktakraw fixture and trail 0-1. Set 1 lasted 32 minutes.

Malaysia have got a few points in a row to make it 9-5. Still a four-point lead but it’s getting close for India. They need two more points to win gold.

Dipika and Harinder have taken an early 5-1 lead in the second game. A great start for the Indian pair. If they win this game, they get gold.

Prannoy is putting up a grand effort here. He is grimacing in pain every now and then but he is somehow managing to hold the lead in the decider. He leads 15-13 against Zii Jia Lee of Malaysia.

The twists and turns in this men’s singles quarterfinal are never ending. Prannoy has a one-point lead at the break in the deciding game against Zii Jia Lee of Malaysia. But the worrying factor for India would be Prannoy’s back injury. After almost every point, he is touching his back, which is heavily taped up.

India to shoot first now. Parveen lands the arrow right in the centre to get a 10. Just wide from Aditi and it’s a 9. Jyothi gets a 10. Now over to Taipei. They start with a 10. Archery at its best. 10 again. It’s a 9. They are still level at 200 each. Three more shots to go. Parveen lands another 10 for India. Aditi backs it up with a 10 and Jyothi, the star, smacks it in the middle. What an end for India. Pressure on Taipei now. They need a perfect 30 to level things. It’s a 9 and that’s it. India have won GOLD. The last two 10s doesn’t matter. India win by 1 point.

Chinese Taipei start with a 10, followed by another 10. Wow, another 10. Just the start they wanted to End 3. Parveen gets a 9. Aditi shoots 10, right in the middle of the board. Jyothi smacks a 10 too. We are level at 141-141 now with three more arrows to go in this End. Taipet start with another 10. This is superb shooting from the archers. Two more 10s and that’s a perfect 60 in this series for Chinese Taipei. Good start from India’s Parveen, she gets a 10. Aditi hits bullseye too and Jyothi too follows. What a round this has been. Nothing separates the two teams after End 3. It’s India 171-171 Chinese Taipei. One more End to go.

It is 2-2 between India and Phillipines. India were leading but Phillipines completed their comeback in the 4th game to make it 2-2.

9 each from Parveen and Aditi, while Jyothi is once again the saving grace with a 10. But the Chinese Taipei archers are fire at the other end. A perfect 30 in the first three arrows. The lead has increased to 4 points now. Good recovery from Parveen, she gets her first 10 of the final. Aditi backs it with another 10. Jyothi does it again. Much better from India. A perfect 30 to finish the second End. 9,10, and 7 from Chinese Taipei. There’s the error that India were waiting for. India have the lead. It’s India 112-111 Chinese Taipei with two Ends to go.

A bit of a nervy start by the Indian archers. Parveen Kaur starts with a 9, Aditi Swami gets a 9 too but Jyothi Vennam is spot on with a 10. One of the Chinese Taipei archers shoots a 7 means despite 10s from the other two India have a one-point lead after the first three arrows. But oh no, Parveen starts with an 8. Aditi and Jyothi get 9 each. And no let up from Chinese Taipei archers this time. They hit 10, 10, and 9 to take a two-point lead after the first End. India 54-56 Chinese Taipei in the gold medal match in women’s compound archery team event.

ANTIM PANGHAL LOSES!

Japan’s Akari Fujinami grabbed a 6-0 victory by fall against the Indian in their women’s freestyle 53kg quarterfinal.

India’s Jyothi Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur beat Indonesia’s Ratih Fadhly, Syahara Khoerunisa, Sri Ranti 233-219 to enter the compound archery women’s team final, assured of at least silver.

They will face Chinese Taipei for the gold.

India’s Aadhya Tiwari, Jay Meena lose to Chinese Taipei’s Kai Wen Yu, Chu Ling Cheng in soft tennis mixed doubles Group 1 Match 1.

PV Sindhu goes down to He Bingjiao of China in straight games (16-21, 12-21) in the women’s singles quarterfinal. This was a one-sided contest to say the least. Sindhu just didn’t turn up. She showed glimpses of her class but only glimpses were never going to be enough against World No.5.

India men are currently up against Chinese Taipei in kabaddi!

A much better show from the Indonesian trio Ratih Zilizati Fadhly, Syahara Khoerunisa, Sri Ranti in End 2 but no let up from India’s Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur. Four out of their six arrows in the second End were 10s. They still have a huge 10-point lead. India 118-108 Indonesia.

Wow! PV Sindhu storms back into the contest. It was looking like He Bingjiao would run away with it even in the second game but the Indian shuttler has made sure there is a contest. A perfect start for India! Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur hit 10s in their first three arrows of the first End in the compound archery women’s team semi-final. Jyothi, Aditi and Parneet came up with another perfect series of perfect 10s while the Indonesians faltered again. India have already taken a sizeable lead of x points. India 60-51 after End 1.

Wow! Sindhu has been outwitted in the first game by China’s He Bingjiao 16-21. The Chinese shuttler had a clear strategy of targeting Sindhu’s backhand and making the double Olympic medallist run from left to right of the court. Sindhu won’t be entirely happy with her performance but a silver lining is the couple of series of points that she took after the break.

He Bingjiao has clearly been the dominant player and the scoreline of 11-8 in her favour reflects that. Sindhu will need to find a solution to her backhand problems. Bingjiao has scored multiple points there so far in this women’s singles quarter-final.

In the preliminary first run, India’s Charles Merlin Arpoudam finished in 10th position and Shreyasi came 13th in the standings.

After 35km, Man Singh is currently ninth in the standings. Meanwhile, Appachangada Bo Belliappa is 15th.

Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur too good! It was a bit of a no-contest, to be honest. India advance to the semi-final in the women’s compound archery team event with a resounding 231-220 win against Hung Ting Cheng, Yuk Sheung Wong, Yin Yi Luk of Hong Kong China.

Terrific from India! The first series of End 3 creates all the difference. No 10s from Hong Kong China but Jyothi, Aditi and Parneet all shot 10s to stretch India’s lead and although Hong Kong put up a slightly better show in the second set of three arrows, the Indian archers kept their composure led by Aditi and Jyothi who shot a 10 each to finish the End 3. India lead 173-165 in the women’s compound archery quarter-final.

Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Aditi Swami save the day for India with two 10s in the last two arrows. India maintain their two-point lead after End 2 against Hung Ting Cheng, Yuk Sheung Wong, Yin Yi Luk of Hong Kong China. It’s India 114-112. Two more Ends to go.
