Arsenal have stepped up negotiations for Rosenborg midfielder Sverre Nypan.

The 18-year-old was due to fly into Manchester on Friday night ahead of talks with Manchester City while United have also spoken to his agents.

However, Arsenal are pushing to beat rivals to his signature with the help of Martin Odegaard.

The midfielder, who plays for Rosenborg in the Norwegian first division, is currently weighing up his options.

The Gunners wish to recruit global emerging talent, while their short-term injury crisis has also given them new impetus to shop for depth in the January transfer window.

Nypan would be Arsenal’s first signing under their interim sporting director, Jason Ayto, who succeeded Edu Gaspar upon his exit last November.

In the past, Nypan has admitted that his dream would be to play in Manchester – only in Man United’s red, rather than the sky blue of City.

Before Rosenborg faced the Red Devils in a friendly last summer, he admitted that he would love to play for the 20-time English champions, but later down the line.

‘It would obviously be a dream come true to play for Manchester United,’ he told the United Norway podcast.

‘I’m aware United has shown some interest. But I’m quite adamant that I don’t want to open that door yet.

‘I want to focus on Rosenborg and not think too far ahead.’

However, things seemed to have changed for the highly-rated talent, with a plethora of elite clubs now vying for his signature.

Nypan made 24 appearances last season, scoring nine goals and registering five assists for the Rosenborg first team.

The teenager made his debut for Rosenborg on 6 November 2022, starting in a league match against Jerv.

He became the youngest player ever to represent Rosenborg at 15 years and 322 days and is now a reliable starter for the club.

In May 2023, he became the youngest player to score in a league match for them, at just 16 years and 145 days old.
