Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Shattered: Huge Loss to Bollywood

The passing of the cherished Dr. Rustom Soonawala is the end of an era beyond Bollywood. At 95, Dr. Soonawala who breathed his last breath on January 5, was a gynecologist but, at the same time, a confidant to some of India’s most prominent families.

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991. He was one of the firsts in his field, inventing the polyethylene IUD, a significant advance in birth control methods.

Dr. Soonawala is part of Bollywood’s golden names. He gave Kareena Kapoor Khan and went on to welcome her son Taimur Ali Khan decades later. His experience ran as far as 1974, when Karisma Kapoor entered the world; and 1982, Ranbir Kapoor arrived.

This makes it all the more remarkable: he delivered Raha Kapoor in 2022, Ranbir’s daughter. That kind of generational bonding with the Kapoor family talks of the extent of trust and respect they had in him.

Equally worthy of mention is the furtherance of his legacy through his son, Dr. Feroze Soonawala, in delivering the younger son, Jehangir Ali Khan, to Kareena and Saif Ali Khan. More importantly, his patients recall him as a sensitive and caring doctor who left an indelible mark on their lives.

The medical fraternity and Bollywood have lost a gem, and this is the celebration of a life that transcended the clinic. Dr. Rustom Soonawala’s legacy as a trailblazing gynecologist and trusted friend will be remembered with warmth by all who knew him. Rest in peace.
