After iPhones, Google Wallet adds support for Digital Driver’s License; Know how to use

Support for Digital Driver’s License on Google Wallet. This comes after IDs received support on Apple Wallet app for iPhones.

After Apple Wallet app introduced the ability to add state IDs, following in its footsteps is Google. It has started beta testing a feature that will allow you to add Driver’s License to your Google Wallet. The idea is to let you add state ID cards and digital driver’s licenses in Google Wallet. This was earlier announced in May during the Google I/O keynote, and now Google has finally launched a new beta version for this feature. However, digital state ID card testing is for residents of Maryland. Beta testers can now add a “Digital Driver’s License” to their Google Wallet on Android smartphones.

Google’s support page informs that the feature is available for users that are part of the Google Play Services beta version 48.22. Also, they must own a smartphone that is running Android 8 or later. Apart from this, Google informed that Bluetooth and Nearby Devices must be switched on to use this feature. However, users must set a screen lock for added security of the wallet.

How to add a State ID on Google Wallet? It is simple! The Verge shared a detailed step-by-step guide for the users of Maryland. Here is all you need to do.

How to add digital driver’s license in Google Wallet

    • First, open Google Wallet and head to the Add to Wallet, then ID card.
    • Scan the front of the ID as well as the back.
    • Take a short recording of your face.
    • Then submit your application while following the on-screen application.
    • Finally, wait for Maryland to accept the card.

However, Google has also alerted users that the feature is being tested in beta, which hints that some features may not work as expected. Hence, it is advised that you “keep your physical ID card on you.”

The Verge report also confirmed that this new feature will work on newer Google Pixels as well as other devices such as Samsung Galaxy S20 and more. However, requirements may vary depending on the mode.
