What Is the Film About?
Karthik is a software professional who comes to his native town during the coronavirus lockdown. He sees Pallavi one day and instantly falls in love with her.
Did Pallavi accept Karthik’s love? Do they face any trouble and how do they overcome it forms the movie’s core plot.
Performances
Narne Nithiin plays the lead role in the movie, which is his second outing after the successful Mad. He is in a similar zone here as well sharing fun moments with friends and has a romantic thread with the heroine. Apart from these, in Aay, he has a track going on with his father that leads to decent emotions in the end.
The small emotional bursts and tears rolling out are an improvement while the rest remains the same for Narne Nithiin. It is another decent outing for him, all said and done.
Nayan Sarika fits the bill perfectly of an Insta gen girl who is more into the following and does a lot with giggles and raising eyebrows. Apart from these, there is hardly much for her to do, but she is fine in those small moments she gets.
Analysis
Anji K Maniputhra directs Aay. It is a rom-com where everything is as we expect but with a small tweak.
The opening, like most good films, sets the tone neatly. We see that with the first sequence which puts a doubt in the mind. It is simple but helps in keeping the interest alive.
The main narrative is all about comedy and entertainment. The individual blocks flow from one moment to another via a comedy sketch. The good thing is that everything is made to flow organically, even if we know the desired effect.
The movie works as long as the focus is on entertainment. The impact varies from block to block, but there is always a gag coming nonstop.
The first half rides on these gags with a twist in the tale around the interval mark. It is not that unexpected which lowers the overall impression. Still, as entertainment works one looks forward to the same in the second half.
Post intermission, the comedy flow continues with the drama escalating simultaneously. There is a lot of silliness, but the actors pull it off effortlessly with their sharp timing.
As mentioned at the start, the story offers nothing new. The caste angle as a conflict between the leads is very routine at this point. However, it’s the twist given to the predictable expectations that make the difference.
The way the caste angle is slowly turned into a new thread and merged emotionally into the main theme of the movie is where Aay gets it right.
The climax portion with the message and drama works without going overboard. The simple and effective resolution of the conflict elevates the proceedings. It is not in a big way, but it’s enough to strike a positive chord with the audience.
Overall, Aay has a wafer-thin storyline, but the nonstop entertainment of varying degrees keeps one engaged. And then, when it matters, it wraps things up neatly, leaving a positive impression at the end. It’s not the best thing out there but it offers enough to make a passable one-time watch.
Performances by Others Actors
Without any doubt, one can say Ankith Koyya and Rajkumar Kasireddy are the major pillars of the movie along with the hero.
The duo are a riot, and when the material is good, they take it to the next level. Some gags and part of the narrative only contain them which shouldn’t be a surprise at all given their importance.
Senior actor Vinod Kumar gets a small yet good role after a long time. It is sure to register when the key moment arrives. Among the rest of the cast, Mime Gopi is another known face, but he is underutilised.
Music and Other Departments?
Ram Miriyala provides the music for the movie. It fits the mood and blends well into the proceedings although nothing in particular shines. Ajay Arasada takes care of the background score which is fine. The cinematography could have been better given the locations. The editing is okay. The writing is mostly about the funny banter which is decent.
