Actor Aamir Khan has once again made headlines, this time regarding his long boycott of award functions. In a conversation with Nana Patekar, the actor revealed that he does not believe in ranking films based on their merit.
He fired his shots at Allu Arjun’s ‘Pushpa: The Rise’, expressing his surprise at Allu Arjun winning the Best Actor Award over Vicky Kaushal for his role in ‘Sardar Udham’.

Aamir said that art can be too subjective to rank it in a mathematical way. Emphasizing the emotional point of view of the Indian public, he stressed that more often than not, awards are given to the person rather than their art.
Aamir’s boycott of award ceremonies is not something new. While the actor used to attend award shows expecting to get a win, 1993 came as a shock to him when SRK got the Filmfare Best Actor Award for ‘Baazigar’ instead of him for ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke’.

This was repeated in 1995 when SRK once again took the glory from Aamir by winning the Best Actor award for DDLJ, shattering Aamir’s ambitions to win it for his performance in ‘Rangeela’.
Since then Aamir has lamented over the unfairness of Award shows in choosing real talent.

But If we look at statistics, DDLJ and Baazigar were much bigger hits having better performances than Rangeela and ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke’ respectively.
On the other hand, Aamir’s statements do carry a lot of weight. Allu Arjun getting a national award for portraying a sandalwood smuggler over Vicky’s portrayal of Sardar Udham does not sit well with the moral compass.
Though Vicky Kaushal deserved a lot of awards for his impactful performance, Pushpa was a national sensation in terms of the popularity of the character, the dialogues, and the film in general.
Still, the National Award Ceremony should act as a platform to celebrate true art, and not just hand over awards based on the BO collection of a film.
