To bring down the traffic snarls in Mumbai city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is working on a concept called an ‘Access Road’ project that constitutes a series of horizontal roads running through underground tunnels. Initially, the BMC would focus on nine congested junctions in the city, officials said.
About the Project
In the first phase, out of the nine key locations of Mumbai, three of them are at nodal junctions in the Western Express Highway (WEH), and six are at junctions in Eastern Express Highway (EEH). In the next phase, nine more heavily-congested locations in the EEH and WEH will be added.
How is the project being implemented?
The project aims to implement a ‘grade separation’ mechanism at the heavily-congested junctions of the WEH and the EEH. As a result, lanes will be taken underground to separate traffic into two levels, enabling reduction of waiting time at traffic signals.
BMC’s effort to improve AQI: 12,000 km roads washed in a month
In its road washing campaign, the BMC has been able to clean over 12,000 km of roads in the past one month, as per the civic body’s data. In a bid to improve Mumbai’s Air Quality by preventing dust displacement, BMC commissioner and state appointed administrator, Iqbal
Singh Chahal, announced in November that all major, minor and internal roads in the city and suburbs will undergo a wash by civic authorities. Earlier on November 21, CM Eknath Shinde also visited several parts of the city and took stock of the ongoing road washing. Mumbai has a total stretch of 2,000 km of roads, but BMC data shows that till date 12, 678 km of roads have been washed.
