Amid a diplomatic row, Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with India. Speaking at a recent press conference in Montreal, Trudeau emphasised India’s economic strength, geopolitical significance, and growing global role. However, he stressed the need for collaborative efforts between India and Canada to uncover all the facts related to the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This follows Trudeau’s prior mention of ‘credible allegations’ implicating Indian agents in Nijjar’s killing. India responded strongly, deeming the allegations unsubstantiated and highlighting Canada’s support for Khalistan terrorists. The longstanding strains in India-Canada relations, rooted in concerns about Khalistan extremism in Canada, have escalated, affecting visas, trade, economic ties, and a substantial diaspora.
