The Iron Bowl may have lost some of its luster from previous years, but that’s not likely to show on the field of the biggest state championship in college football.
No. 7 Alabama enters this game in rare circumstances, in competition for neither the SEC championship nor the College Football Playoff. But a double-digit wins season and premier New Year’s Day 6 bowl game are still on the line, as are bragging rights over the Tigers — which, depending on whom you ask, is worth as much or more than all else.
Conversely, Auburn has seen a reversal of fortunes under former All-American running back-turned interim coach Cadillac Williams. The Tigers scored a massive 13-10 victory over Texas A&M in Williams’ first game replacing the fired Bryan Harsin, injecting energy into what had been an apathetic team.
Moreover, the events of the 2021 Iron Bowl should show that rankings matter little in this rivalry: Alabama entered the game as heavy favorites, but needed to score 10 fourth-quarter points — including a game-tying touchdown in the final minute — just to send the game to overtime. The Crimson Tide eventually won in four overtimes, helping cement Bryce Young as the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy.

Young will be the focal point of the Tide’s offensive attack, as will Jahmyr Gibbs, Cameron Latu, Ja’Corey Brooks and Co. Look for the Tigers to feature a heavy dose of running back Tank Bigsby — as well as a playbook that should feature nothing short of the kitchen sink.
Will this year’s Iron Bowl have similar theatrics as in 2021? Only one way to find out. The Sporting News breaks down everything you need to watch the Iron Bowl:
