IN THE series of good news concerning the Apple Watch, two instances are the fresh anecdotes of the wearable saving lives, now with the fall detection feature. The feature was swift to address medical emergencies in Minnesota and Ohio recently, Macrumors said in a report.
Apple Watch: Minnesota Incident
Speaking of Minnesota, Michael Brodkorb was hit on the road by a car that escaped from the scene. Post monitoring the impact, Apple Watch called 911 as the wearer struggled to respond. Besides calling for immediate help, the wearable alerted his wife and children. In turn, getting him rapid medical support. Brodkorb suffered injuries on the ribs and tailbone, according to the report.
“It absolutely is a life-saving tool,” he said. Impressed by the feature, he emailed Tim Cook, Chief Executive Officer of Apple. The tech chief wished him a speedy recovery.
Apple Watch: Ohio Incident
In another incident in Cincinnati, William Fryer, 83, was strolling past the Ohio River Trial when his “knees gave out” due to a blood clot. While no one was around, the Apple Watch took control. Post detecting the fall, the gadget alerted Fryer’s daughter and dialled emergency help.
As the police located him, he was given medical treatment at the right time. Further, the wearer was ‘grateful’ to his Apple wearable for acting promptly.

Apple Watch: How to Turn on Fall Detection
Step 1: Head to the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab
Step 2: Hit ‘Emergency SOS’
Step 3: Toggle Fall Detection to on mode
Step 4: Select from either of the two options – ‘Always on’ or ‘Only on during workouts’ depending on your needs
If you are 55 or over and have registered it correctly in Apple systems, Fall Detection will be switched on by default. It does not work for wearers in the age group under the age of 18.
