Jalandhar records lowest turnout in four polls; all parties say favours them
On May 11, just over half the registered voters exercised their franchise in the byelection to the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, with all the major political parties in fray claiming that the low turnout will actually benefit them. Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C said Jalandhar recorded a voter turnout of 54.5 per cent, nearly 8 per cent lower than 62.36 per cent it recorded in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, and about 14 per cent lower than 67.21 per cent and 67.11 per cent in 2014 and 2009, respectively.
Among the nine assembly segments that fall under Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, Kartarpur and Shahkot recorded highest 57.4 per cent turnout each while Jalandhar Central (48.9 per cent) reported lowest. Jalandhar West recorded 56.5 per cent followed by 55.9 per cent each in Nakodar, 55.8 per cent in Phillaur, 54.45 per cent in Jalandhar North, 54 per cent in Adampur and 49.7 per cent in Jalandhar Cantt, as per figures available.
