The FIR against Swapnil was registered under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering the personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). No arrests have been made in the case as yet.
The incident took place at the Chembur Gymkhana when Nigam was performing at a show which was part of the Chembur Festival. A video of the incident, which has gone viral, shows Nigam walking down the stairs from the stage after his performance, and Swapnil can be seen holding him from behind.
It is believed Swapnil wanted to take a selfie with the singer. However, Nigam’s colleague Hari Prakash tried to stop Swapnil when he pushed him aside. Another of Nigam’s colleagues, Rabbani Khan, came forward to stop Swapnil but was pushed aside and fell off the stage sustaining injuries. In the melee that ensued, Nigam too lost his balance on the stairs, as per his statement.
Later, the three of them visited the local hospital where Khan was treated and allowed to leave.
Nigam along with his team then reached the Chembur police station where the Zonal DCP Hemraj Rajput recorded his statement. Rajput said, “So far, we have not made any arrests in the case. We will be going through the videos and other details to find the exact sequence of events following which necessary action will be taken. Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered in the matter.”
Late on Monday, Swapnil’s sister Suprada Phatarpekar, said in a series of tweets, “As organiser of the Chembur festival, I wish to shed light on some facts about the unfortunate incident that occurred at the end of Chembur Festival 2023. While Shri Sonu Nigam was being hurriedly ushered off the stage after delivering his performance. My brother was trying to take a selfie with him. Due to the rush & furore, there was a commotion that ensued.”
“The person who fell was taken to Zen hospital & was discharged after examination. Shri Sonu Nigam is unhurt. On behalf of the organisation team, we have officially apologised to Sonu sir & his team for the unpleasant incident. Please do not believe any baseless rumours and those who are trying to politicize the matter,” she added.
