It wasn’t too long before Tamil cinema used to absolutely dominate South Indian scene in terms of finesse and panache. Though the box office prospects were not as good as Telugu Cinema, it must be noted that Tamil industry was leading in terms of directors craft, and exquisite film vocabulary.
However, it appears that Tamil Cinema is well and truly passed its prime as all of its senior directors have nearly vanished or near extinction.

KS Ravikumar who famously made blockbusters like Narasimha, Dasavatharam, Muthu and others is nearly invisible now with no notable films in hand. Director Hari, popular for the Singam franchise has also retired.
Shankar, who was once a celebrated director is being ridiculed on all counts. He is getting badly trolled for his poor recent performances.

AR Murugadoss who was once a leading name in Kollywood has been struggling to set up a new film. He set up a project with Salman Khan but this is also getting badly ignored by everyone.
Only Mani Ratham is relevant to this day but he too is punching only in Tamil markets and getting outrightly rejected in other parts.

The current charge of Tamil cinema is being led by the likes of Lokesh Kanagaraj and Nelson now while the seniors are sliding further away. Shankar’s disastrous downfall could be the last nail in the coffin.
