Attack on Indians Still Haunts

More than two years removed from a viral video documenting a woman’s racist attack on Indians in the US, the suspect and her victims have reached a settlement. However, the scars of the incident still remain.

Esmerelda Upton pleaded guilty to four hate crimes last June, serving 40 days in confinement. Fearing more severe punishment after a trial, she has reached a financial agreement with Dr. Bidisha Rudra and her friends whom she physically assaulted and threatened to shoot in 2022.

The incident, caught on camera, took place in Plano, Texas, and became a huge embarrassment for the state police who arrived at the incident but didn’t arrest Upton immediately. It raised concerns for the community which is susceptible to such attacks every day.

Despite their significant contributions to American society, Indian Americans remain targets of hate and violence. Upton might have settled this case through money but there needs to be a drastic change to resolve the rising hate crimes against migrant communities.
