The three-day Alappuzha district conference of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] will be held at Haripad from January 10 to 12.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the delegate conference at Sabaris Convention Centre (Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Nagar) at 10.30 a.m. on Friday. CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan, Polit Bureau member M.A. Baby and other leaders will attend the inaugural function. The Chief Minister is expected to attend the conference on all three days.
Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, CPI(M) district secretary R. Nazar said that 407 delegates, including 361 delegates representing 42,009 party members in the district and 46 district committee members, would attend the delegate conference.
Mr. Nazar said the Left Democratic Front had faced setbacks in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the district. The party had identified the reasons for the setback and was attempting to make a comeback, he said.
Mr. Nazar will present the organisational report on Friday. It will be followed by discussions. The new district committee and representatives for the CPI(M) State conference will be elected on January 12.
On the inaugural day, a seminar on the topic ‘Indian Democracy: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow’ will be held at 5 p.m. It will be inaugurated by Mr. Govindan. Various cultural programmes are planned as part of the conference.
A public meeting will be inaugurated by Mr. Vijayan at the Mannarasala ground (Sitaram Yechury Nagar) on January 12 at 5 p.m.
Kuttanad seat
Mr. Nazar said that no discussions had taken place on CPI(M) taking over the Kuttanad Assembly seat from the Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP). “Currently, the Kuttanad seat is held by the NCP. There has been no discussion about the CPI(M) taking it over,” he said.
On the reported rift between senior CPI(M) leader G. Sudhakaran and party leadership, the party district secretary said that Mr. Sudhakaran was a highly regarded person within the party and in Kerala society. “Mr. Sudhakaran is a true communist and an able administrator. He actively participates in party programmes. He will attend the party district conference,” Mr. Nazar said.
He said the Excise department had booked nine people, including legislator U. Prathibha’s son under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act following an investigation. He also justified Ms. Prathibha’s defence of her son.
