This year, the Malayalam industry went into God mode by giving gems like Bramayugam, Premalu, Manjummel Boys, Aavesham, Kishkindha Kaandam, Sookshmadarshini, Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life, Marco, and others.
Content-wise, the Malayalam industry delivered the best films out of all the industries in the country. So, it’s shocking that the Malayalam film industry suffered a loss of almost 700 crores.

Despite these successes, the industry faces a financial crisis, with a loss of around 700 crores reported, as per figures from the Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA).
Out of the 204 films released this year, only 26 were financially successful, generating a profit of 300-350 crores collectively.

In contrast, the rest of the films failed to make a significant impact at the box office, leading to a staggering loss of 650-700 crores.
Despite the massive production costs of approximately 1000 crores, only a handful of films managed to recover their investments.

The figures highlight a broader issue of financial mismanagement within the industry, with rising production costs, including actor remuneration, posing a major challenge.
KFPA Secretary A. Rakesh emphasized that financial discipline is crucial for the survival of Malayalam cinema, and all stakeholders must cooperate to ensure better financial management.
He also pointed out that increasing actor fees are a significant burden on producers, affecting the overall profitability of films.
While OTT platforms are an important revenue source, many Malayalam films haven’t made it there due to low box office performance.
The association believes that for long-term sustainability, the industry needs to prioritize content quality and manage production costs more effectively.
Despite the financial setbacks, Malayalam cinema remains renowned for its content-driven storytelling, and industry leaders are hopeful that with a more balanced approach, the industry will recover and thrive in the coming years.
