Indian Techie Sriram Krishnan’s US Role Puts Modi Govt Under Fire

An Indian-origin man has gotten a key role in Trump’s cabinet which in turn has divided Indians online. The different approaches to hiring talent by both nations became a major concern for netizens.

Sriram Krishnan, a Chennai-born techie, has been appointed as Senior White House advisor on AI in the US. This is quite a unique move as he has no prior experience working with the government, rather his resume includes companies like PayPal, Microsoft, and Facebook which helped him land this role.

Meanwhile, India constantly struggles to hire experts through lateral entry due to political and bureaucratic intervention. Such important roles are only reserved for government officials rather than people from academia and the private sector.

Online users came upfront to criticize India’s rigid bureaucratic system following this news. Columnist Sadanand Dhume joked that it’s easier for the US to hire Krishnan than for Modi to make him a joint secretary for some obscure ministry in India.

PM Modi had earlier attempted to hire 45 experts for advisory roles but faced backlash from the opposition as it bypassed reservation laws. This led users to blame Congress for creating this red-taped mess.

Krishnan’s appointment in the White House highlights the importance of rewarding talent which India is missing out on. A government vacancy should be filled on merit instead of their official role.
