Effects of Social Media & OTT

A horrifying case of social media corruption has surfaced on the internet, and it is making everyone wonder if the children being exposed to social media will destroy the next generation. The case is of a nine-year-old boy from Pune, who was charged with sexual assault of a three-year-old.

As horrendous as it sounds, the crime was committed after the child was influenced by the content on social media. The boy is a third standard student and a neighbor of the preschool student who fell victim to his antics.

The boy was detained and tried by the Juvenile Justice Board. The custody of the boy has been returned to his parents. Sub-Inspector Snehal Jadhav mentions how the preschooler used to call him “Dada.” He committed the act when he found the victim alone outside her home.

The child reported the act to her mother, who filed an FIR for sexual harassment. The boy was detained under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Indian Penal Code) and POCSO act.

The sub inspector adds, “The girl was taken into confidence in the presence of an NGO representative working for child rights. She gave the detailed information about the incident. After the boy was detained, he told us he was influenced by social media and committed the act”.

It makes one wonder, where is the internet age taking us? There are enough content creators on platforms like Instagram and X who make seriously concerning content. Highly sexual content needs to be kept out of the reach of the impressionable minds.
