The Indian Railways will operate hundreds of ‘Mela Special’ trains to transport passengers from various locations across the country to Prayagraj for the Kumbh Mela between January 13 and February 26, 2025.
According to sources in the Railways, the Railway Board has set a target of 150 rakes comprising Integral Coach Factory (ICF)-design coaches to originate from almost all the zones to Prayagraj. The Southern Railway, Western Railway and Northern Railway will be contributing the maximum of 15 rakes each. A total of 300 locomotives will be deployed to operate the ‘Mela Special’ trains.
352 round trips
In total, 352 round trips have been planned, with the maximum of 127 trips originating from East Central Railway. A majority of these special trains will have electric locomotives attached at both ends to avoid congestion due to shunting at Prayagraj. Senior Railway officers have been told to mobilise the rakes, locomotives, and manpower without affecting scheduled freight and passenger train operations.
