Jilted lover ends life in Hubballi


A young man, reportedly upset over a friend not accepting his proposal, torched himself in front of her at Thayavva Temple in Tadas village in Haveri district on Friday and later succumbed to burn injuries in Hubballi.

The deceased has been identified as Praveen Betadur, 25, a fruit vendor from Belagali village in Hubballi taluk. Praveen who had come to the Thayavva Temple in Tadas, had doused himself in petrol before the act. He was immediately rushed to KMC-RI in Hubballi, where he succumbed to the injuries, the Tadas Police Station have said.

According to the police, Praveen was friends with a nursing college student from Kundagol taluk and used to meet regularly. Recently, Praveen had proposed to her. However, she rejected the proposal. Praveen had reportedly brought the girl with him to Tadas and had proposed again. The girl however had made it clear to him that he was just her friend, following which he set himself on fire, the police said.

Although bystanders tried to douse the fire, by the time they managed to, Praveen had suffered major burns. A case has been registered in Tadas Police Station.
