‘Lady SPG’: Photo of woman officer accompanying PM Modi goes viral

NEW DELHI: BJP MP and actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut recently shared a photograph on Instagram, showing a woman commando walking behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union minister Kiren Rijiju.
The image, which Kangana captioned as “Lady SPG,” has gone viral, igniting discussions about women empowerment and their increasing representation in elite security forces.
While social media users have speculated that the woman in the photograph might be a member of the Special Protection Group (SPG), the elite force tasked with the Prime Minister’s security, her exact role and service branch remain undisclosed.

The SPG, established in 1985, is known for providing close protection to the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers, and their immediate family members. Its officers are renowned for their leadership, professionalism, and advanced training in security protocols, often collaborating with the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and state police forces to ensure seamless security arrangements.
In recent years, women officers have taken on commanding roles across units such as air defense, signals, ordnance, intelligence, engineering, and service corps, reflecting a broader push towards gender inclusivity in defense services.
