H-1B Hires Decline: Amazon Above Indian Firms

H-1B visa sponsorships in major tech giants have taken a major dig in 2024, which is a worrying sign for skilled Indian workers and graduates in the US.

While Indians dominated the sponsorship programs, comprising 72% of H-1B recipients in 2023, this year all major companies are shifting towards hiring locally. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) disclosed the data where Amazon remained the largest sponsor with 9,265 approvals this year.

Indian companies are just behind with Infosys at second on the list with 8,140 approvals, while Cognizant and TCS have 6,321 and 5,274 H-1B hires respectively. Google is the only other American company in the top 5 with 5,364 sponsorships in 2024.

All these companies have taken a significant drop from last year like Amazon, which sponsored more than 11,000 visa approvals the previous year. With this trajectory across top firms, the tech industry is shifting focus and reducing dependence on foreign hiring.

This also aligns with the new president Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda. Even Indian companies in the US are following this trend and focussing more on local hiring and green card sponsorships.
