Millions of Indians dream of going to the US or Canada in hopes of a better life and opportunities and some even take illegal routes to enter these countries. This number of illegal entries has skyrocketed in recent years.
Last year, the US authorities arrested over 14,000 Indians at the Canadian border for entering the country illegally. Many of them paid up to $100,000 to smugglers since they failed to secure US visas.

Most migrants are from Punjab and Gujarat, trying to escape economic struggles and political tensions at home. They often sell land or take loans to fund their journey, driven by hopes of settling in US cities and getting an informal job.
People take highly dangerous routes which sometimes lead to tragic incidents. In 2022, a family of four, including two children, lost their life due to extreme cold, while illegally crossing the US-Canada border.

Now that Trump is back in power, his strict immigration policies will likely lower these numbers. It will also lead to an increase in deportation, with the new president vowing to have millions of illegal immigrants removed from the country.
Despite the risks involved, the desire for a better life in the US remains strong, highlighting the need for new reforms.
