Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight rules explained: Including number of rounds, scoring system and are knockouts allowed?

Jake Paul and Mike Tyson will finally meet in the ring tonight , however due to the circumstances of the fight it will not look like your traditional fight.

The controversial circumstances sees Paul, 27, at the height of his athletic ability come up against Tyson, 58, who’s last professional fight was back in 2005, when the YouTube sensation turned boxer was only eight-years-old.

Concerns were sparked over the 31-year age gap between unlikely duo, which were further enhanced when the fight had to be postponed earlier this year after  ‘Iron Mike’ was hospitalised due to an ulcer flare up.

Heading into tonight’s fight, several rules have been amended and approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations to reflect the unique nature of the clash.

Here is a full list of the rules for Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson.

The unique set of rules which have been put in place for tonight’s Netflix special are very similar to those for Tyson’s last exhibition fight four years ago against Roy Jones Jr.

However this time round, the fight will count on both men’s records as it has been sanctioned as an official professional fight.

How many rounds is Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson?

If Tyson or Paul fail to knockout each other out, the blockbuster fight will last eight-rounds, moving away from the traditional 10 or 12 rounds witnessed in standard professional fights.

How long is each round?

Stirring further away from the standard fight set-up, the duo have agreed to fight over eight two-minute rounds instead of the custom three-minute rounds.

Tyson revealed he requested the shorter rounds before the fight was turned into a professional fight, with both fighters asking for the fight to remain over eight two-minute rounds when it was sanctioned as a professional bout.

When asked why he wanted the fight to be fought over the shorter distance, Tyson revealed: ‘I wanted the shorter rounds because I wanted more action. If we only have two minutes, we’ll fight more.’

Are knockouts allowed?

Unlike Tyson vs Jones Jr four years ago when knockouts were not allowed, this time around since it is a sanctioned fight a win via knockout will be permitted.

Both boxers have vowed to knock the other out and it’s safe to say neither will be holding back during the eight-round spectacle as they both want to produce a result which will be talked about for the ages.

Glove weights, will they be wearing head gear?

Despite safety concerns being flagged, neither fighter will don headgear for the clash.

However both fighters will wear heavier gloves for the occasion, with their mitts weighing 14oz instead of the fight standard of 10oz.

14 oz gloves are usually reserved for bag work and sparring sessions as they contain more padding. The reason for this change remains unclear.

Scoring/Judging system

If the fight goes the full distance, the result of the contest will be determined by the three ringside judges.

A 10-point must system will be in place, meaning each round will be scored 10-9 to one of the fighters or 10-8 in the case of a knockdown.

Rounds can also be scored even, 10-10 if judges see nothing to split the two opponents.

Paul and Tyson could also be deducted points if the referee deems the fighter has committed a serious foul.
