While Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are focused on the key battleground states in the dying days of their campaign, there is a major shift in one of the Democratic strongholds.
According to a new report, a portion of Indian Americans in Michigan– historically a Democratic-leaning state, are voting for Trump instead of Kamala Harris this year. During surveys, members of the community highlighted the economic and diplomatic concerns behind this shift.

People argued that the former president is better for the India-US relationship as he has close ties with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On the other hand, Kamala Harris has “never associated herself with the [Indian] community,” according to a voter.
Even African Americans and Muslims, who are generally tilted towards the Democrats, are getting swayed to the other side. Illegal immigration affecting their job opportunities is a major concern for the community which they believe will be best tackled under Trump’s governance.

Michigan has voted for Democratic candidates since 1992 bar one election in 2016 when Trump won the state by a narrow margin. Despite Biden winning it back in 2020, the Republican candidate still has a groundswell of support that can tip the elections in his favor.
