Kalki turned out to be a mega-grosser at the box office as it reportedly made well over Rs 1000 crores at the global box office. In view of this success, the makers are planning to go big with the sequel.
However, despite the mega success of the film, Kalki as a brand franchise doesn’t quite pack the same impetus as a KGF or a Baahubali.

To prove the point, the lackluster response for Kalki on OTT is a testament. The film had no recall value, barring the last 10-15 minutes, which are of course driven by Mahabharatha tracks.
While there is no dissing the box office theatrics, Kalki lacked the desired commercial value to recall the audience. It is not a fan-favorite either, like a KGF or a Pushpa.

Incidentally, when Nag Ashwin, who attended an event last night quoted about Kalki 2, the response was way below ordinary. Not many were even excited about the citation of Kalki 2 which isn’t usually the case with big films.
This probably, to some degree exhibits that Kalki 2 is not an extremely awaited film or a fan-favorite. This is mostly due to the lack of commercial appeal of the first part.

The sequel is in such a zone that people might watch it when it comes but there is no real craving for it like Baahubali 2, KGF 2 or a Pushpa 2.
Regardless, Nag Ashwin will anyway make the second part. But he must be aware of what didn’t quite work in the first part and look to correct the same with the sequel. His storytelling skills arent to be questioned but Nagi must deliver a more commercial experience with some recall value this time around.
