Vettaiyan Box Office: Not Expected From Rajinikanth!

Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan is performing decently at the box office but is falling short of the massive expectations set by his previous hit, Jailer, which grossed over 600 crores.

With Vettaiyan, fans had hoped for a similar blockbuster, but the film has only managed a medicore response which is perfectly in sync with our review.

The film failed to strike a balance, lacking the commercial appeal that Rajinikanth’s hardcore fans expect, while also not offering anything out-of-the-box to satisfy cinephiles.

The result is a film that struggles to find its audience, failing to resonate with the hardcore fanbase or attract critical acclaim.

While the festive season has helped sustain its weekend numbers, a significant drop in collections is anticipated from Monday onwards, even in Tamil Nadu, where Rajinikanth’s fan base is strongest.

So far, the film has earned ₹55 crore in Tamil Nadu in its first three days, with the total expected to reach around ₹72 crore by the end of its four-day weekend.

At the Indian box office, Vettaiyan has pulled in ₹80 crore net in its first three days, which translates to a gross of ₹95 crore with GST. In overseas markets, the film has amassed ₹45-50 crore, bringing its worldwide total to over ₹140 crore gross.

While these numbers are respectable, they pale in comparison to Jailer.

As of now, Vettaiyan is the fourth highest-grossing Kollywood film of 2024, surpassing Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja (₹110 crore gross). It is expected to soon surpass Indian 2 and Raayan in terms of total gross.

At the top of the list for 2024 remains Thalapathy Vijay’s The Greatest Of All Time, which has grossed ₹450 crore worldwide and was itself considered an underperformer.

This trend indicates that the Tamil film industry has faced challenges this year, with many anticipated releases not meeting expectations.
