Box Office Report Card: Devara Joins Stree 2

The film industry experienced a downturn in Q3 2024, especially in Hindi, with only one major hit amid a streak of disappointing releases.

The quarter opened with Karan Johar’s Kill, an action thriller featuring a non-star cast, which earned around Rs 25 crore, marking it as an average success thanks to positive word of mouth.

Next, Sarfira, starring Akshay Kumar, flopped with a mere Rs 22.50 crore, primarily due to audience disinterest in remakes.

Bad Newz, led by Vicky Kaushal and Triptii Dimri, performed moderately well with a total of Rs 63.25 crore, boosted by its popular soundtrack, although its trend was less impressive after a strong opening.

Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, directed by Neeraj Pandey and starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu, bombed spectacularly, grossing under Rs 10 crore, while Janhvi Kapoor’s Ulajh suffered a similar fate.

The Independence Day weekend saw a clash between Stree 2, Khel Khel Mein, and Vedaa. While Stree 2 emerged as an all-time blockbuster with Rs 585 crore, Khel Khel Mein flopped at Rs 43 crore, and Vedaa was a disaster, earning under Rs 25 crore.

Further disappointments followed with The Buckingham Murders and Yudhra, both of which failed to attract audiences, grossing only Rs 10.50 crore and Rs 10 crore, respectively.

Devara is projected to close at Rs 60 crore, marking it as another above-average grosser.

Overall, Q3 was lackluster for the Hindi film industry, save for the success of Stree 2, leaving expectations high for upcoming releases in Q4 and beyond.
