Rajinikanth’s last film, Jailer, was a blockbuster not just in Tamil but also in Telugu. Initially, it generated decent hype, but after the Hukum song went viral, audience excitement surged, driving many to theaters.
Unfortunately, that same excitement is totally absent from Rajinikanth’s latest film, Vettaiyan.

While Vettaiyan may have some buzz in Tamil, its presence in other languages, particularly Telugu, is almost nonexistent.
Despite featuring stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, and Rana Daggubati, this pan-Indian film is struggling to create any significant impact in the Telugu market.

One of the biggest issues for Vettaiyan in Telugu is its title. Many Telugu fans feel disrespected because the filmmakers chose to keep the original Tamil title instead of changing it to something that would connect better with Telugu audiences.
In the past, Tamil films usually got translated titles that made sense in Telugu, helping viewers relate better to the movies. For example, popular Tamil films like Anniyan and Nanban were renamed Aparichitudu and Snehitudu for Telugu audiences.

Writer Abburi Ravi has criticized the makers of Vettaiyan in this regard. He wrote on his X account, “In the past when dubbing movies from other languages into Telugu, filmmakers would give them Telugu titles that made sense.”
“They would also translate any signs or text from the original movie into Telugu so that local audiences could understand better. However, this practice has changed, and now many films are being released with their original titles without any translation.”
He continued, “While I respect the uniqueness and artistry of each language, I feel that it’s unfair to disregard Telugu audiences in this way. It’s not right for Telugu people to support filmmakers who don’t show respect for their language. Spending money to watch films that don’t honor our language is not something I consider a sign of greatness.”
This trend started with Ajith’s film Valimai, which kept its Tamil title when released in Telugu. Now, Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan is also sticking with its original name. While “Vettaiyan” means “hunter” in Telugu, fans feel let down that there was no effort to make it more relatable.
Besides the flat trailer, the Telugu audience is not able to relate to Vettaiyan also because of the Tamil title.
