Protecting Kids From Vulgarity & Sexism

    Instagram Teen Accounts

Instagram is introducing a new feature called “teen accounts” to protect young users. These accounts will automatically apply to users under 16, limiting who can contact them and controlling the content they see. If teens or parents want to change the settings, parental approval will be required.

Teens can also choose topics they enjoy, helping them see more positive and fun content. Parents can set up supervision to monitor activity and approve changes for teens under 16, or even older if necessary.

Instagram Reels, originally a fun and creative space, has become a platform where controversial content, including vulgarity and sexism, is spreading.

This shift raises concerns about its negative impact on the younger audience, who are still developing their understanding of appropriate behavior and social norms.

As Reels’ popularity grows, so does the prevalence of inappropriate content, such as explicit language, provocative dances, and sexist jokes.

Young users, especially teens, are vulnerable to these influences. Exposure to vulgarity can normalize inappropriate behavior, making it seem acceptable or even desirable. Similarly, sexist content reinforces harmful stereotypes, objectifying women and promoting toxic masculinity.

So there is hope that these new Instagram teen accounts have the potential to reduce the exploitation and objectification of teens on social media by restricting who can contact them.

This means fewer opportunities for predators or harmful content to reach teens. By involving parents in the supervision process, it ensures that teens have more oversight and protection online.

Focusing on positive content and limiting exposure to inappropriate material will help teens navigate social media safely, shielding them from harmful influences and promoting a healthier online experience.

But how far it would be successful only time will tell.
