India has submitted Laapata Ladies as their official entry for next year’s Oscars. For many, this is a cause of celebration, but for a few, this might reopen some old wounds.
The Kiran Rao-directed film was selected over 29 others by the Jahnu Barua-led selection committee. The list of movies included gems from different regional languages but one film that stuck out the most in this list was Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal.

Although Animal was a blockbuster hit at the box office, it was trolled and condemned for glorifying misogyny by its critics. Kiran Rao echoed this criticism and called out the toxic culture in the industry.
Ever since then Vanga and Rao have been at each other’s throats in the past taking digs in interviews. While Kiran’s remarks were subtle at first, the Animal director went a step ahead and started name-calling Rao as the “second ex-wife of a superstar” in response.

Laapata Ladies, on the other hand, received love and praise for its social message and for promoting women’s empowerment. Maybe this was the reason why it surpassed Animal on Netflix when it was released on OTT.
This Oscar submission has added salt to the wounds, with netizens trolling Animal once again after the news broke. Many even started to anticipate another meltdown from Vanga which still seems impending.
