It was a disastrous summer for the Conservative Party when Rishi Sunak’s historic reign as the first British Indian PM came to a halt. After the result, the Party was on the lookout for a new leader and immediately there were plans afoot. Priti Patel, another British Indian MP, was one of the six leaders who were in contention to become the new Opposition Leader.
However, it turns out the party didn’t have much faith in her. It was clear that the Tories needed a serious reform that could revive them after their worst loss in history. And maybe that is why they don’t want another Indian-origin person at the helm of the party again. This was made clear when Patel couldn’t even make it past the first round of voting.

Robert Jenrick, former immigration minister, led the pack but he shouldn’t celebrate just yet as there are two rounds of voting still left. It can still dwindle anywhere as three other MPs are still in the race to replace Sunak, who is serving as the acting Opposition Leader in the Parliament. If all goes to plan the Tories will have the new face of the Party by November 2, the day Sunak will step down from his current role.
