Foreign Universities Exploiting Indian Ambitions

Which Indian parent doesn’t want their child to at least complete a bachelor’s degree? Well, maybe a businessman or a politician, but a middle-class man’s aspirations are simple– they want their child to have the best education that they can afford and have a good, reputable job. And most students also see this as the only path.

This means that universities across the world, there are a lot of students in India that they can attract. Many foreign universities run different programs to have Indian immigrant students. According to the US Embassy, last year they approved over 140,000 student visas for Indian students.

It shows there is no shortage of Indian people wanting to go abroad for higher education. However, it has its cons as well. First, there is that small issue of high fees that one should take into account. But even if you land an esteemed university via a scholarship, the cost of living in the West is still way higher than in India. Therefore, you must be from a wealthy family, take an education loan, or even do part-time jobs to pay for your rent and food. In addition to all of this, being an Indian you will also face casual racism from the locals if you travel to a Western countries like the US or UK.

But why do students still opt for education abroad? Well, it offers them a degree from a world-renowned university. Moreover, it gives them work opportunities with a higher pay grade. It also opens options for them to settle abroad and have a better standard of living than in India.

This Indian obsession with higher academics combined with their aspiration to settle abroad is the sweet spot that foreign universities target. During a recent event, the US embassy ran a program in a girls’ school in Dehradun. According to an official, they were there “to provide good information to students so they can pick the school that is appropriate for their academic interests.” However, what these programs are doing is trying to attract students with flashy words and visuals. They are trying to form a deep culture among students from a young age so they also aspire to study abroad.

There is nothing wrong with studying abroad if you think it is the right choice for you. However, one should be cognizant of their own reality as well. Children can often get attracted to the lifestyle and beautiful visuals that universities present to them and make a decision based on that. There is a lot more to take into account than just the education.
