The Netflix series IC 814, directed by Anubhav Sinha, is receiving praise for its exceptional storytelling and gripping drama.

The series has captivated audiences with its engaging narrative and the powerful performances of a stellar ensemble cast, including Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Arvind Swamy, and others.

Each actor brought their characters to life with nuance and authenticity, making it a compelling watch.

However, the series has sparked huge controversy in India, as some viewers have taken offense to its portrayal of the 1999 hijacking incident.

A section of people argues that the series humanizes the terrorists involved in the IC-814 hijacking, which led to the release of dangerous figures like Masood Azhar, Omar Sheikh, and Mushtaq Zargar.

These terrorists were later linked to major attacks in India, including the 2001 Parliament attack and the 2008 Mumbai attack.

A prominent social media account, known for spreading propaganda, called for a boycott of the series, accusing it of “whitewashing terrorism” and targeting Hindus.

They highlighted that the hijackers, originally named Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar, Sunny Ahmed, Zahoor Mistry, and Shakir, were depicted in the series as ‘Shankar’ and ‘Bhola.’ The hashtag #BanNetflix is also trending on social media.

These people are tagging Ashwini Vaishnav, the minister of Information and Broadcasting, and asking him to take action on the makers and also levy a big fine on Netflix.

Another social media handle noted that the series altered the names of the terrorists, questioning why the director, Anubhav Sinha, chose to change their names if “terrorism has no religion.”

Many of these so-called critics are believed to be supporters of a particular political party, and they are especially outraged because the series exposes the controversial actions of the 1999 government, particularly under NSA Ajit Doval.

The series suggests that the government’s cowardly decisions, including the release of Hafeez Saeed—who has since been linked to multiple terror attacks in India—played a crucial role in enabling future terrorism.

Additionally, the web series highlights how the plane was allowed to leave Punjab due to the government’s lethargic administration, with the blame conveniently shifted onto the chief pilot.
