Massive Attack on Indian Companies by Chinese

Massive Attack on Indian Companies

There is no denying that India and China don’t have great relations with each other. There has been a major border dispute between the countries for years, that has often broken out in warfare. And, as the latest report suggests, the war is in the cyber sphere as well.

Volt Typhoon, a Chinese hacking group, is allegedly exploiting a security flaw in software from a California-based startup Versa Network to breach internet companies in the United States and India. According to the Bloomberg report, the bug was found, and updated versions were rolled out by the company in June 2023. However, some companies were still using the old versions which made them vulnerable to attack.

US intelligence agencies suspect the Volt Typhoon is backed by the Chinese government. The group has a history of infiltrating US key sectors to cause disruptions. Meanwhile, China has denied any links to the hacking group and termed them as criminals.

The US has always backed India in its war against China. While the India-China border remains a volatile region, the war between the two countries has often branched out to the digital world as well. Whether this recent attack is state-backed or not, the lack of any response against the group from the Chinese government surely adds fuel to the suspicions thrown by the US agencies.
