Underrated OTT Series Shekhar Home: Slow Start, Shocking Climax

Shekhar Home attempts to bring a fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes genre by adapting Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective stories into an Indian setting.

Despite being produced by Indian BBC studios and drawing inspiration from the British Sherlock Holmes, the series struggles a bit to capture the same energy and unique flair but turns out to be a decent watch.

Set in a fictional town called Lonpur in West Bengal, the six-episode series features Kay Kay Menon as the eccentric detective Shekhar and Ranvir Shorey as his loyal partner Jayvrat.

The show follows their adventures as they solve a range of mysteries, from murders and ghostly occurrences to robberies.

The narrative revolves around deciphering dark and complex cases, mirroring the principles of the original Sherlock Holmes stories.

However, the show’s execution is uneven. The start is slow, with the series failing to establish the characters’ identities and their dynamic effectively.

The initial episodes feel a bit stretched with lags. The crimes themselves lack sufficient complexity to maintain interest, and the unconventional methods of the detectives seem a bit far-fetched.

The first four episodes cover a variety of cases, including a serial killer motivated by greed, a bank heist, a woman seeking redemption, and a family feud.

While these episodes are decent, they only build up to a shocking twist later in the series. The final episodes offer a fantastic payoff with intriguing drama and deeper character development, culminating in a shocking climax tied to national security and a connection to Rabindranath Tagore’s work.

Overall, Shekhar Home is watchable. Its slow start and uneven middle are compensated by a superb climax and Kay Kay Menon’s strong performance, ensuring that the four hours spent watching are worthwhile.

Shekhar Home is streaming on Jio cinema.
