Amitoj Oberoi, an off-duty Edison Township police officer of Indian origin, has been sentenced to 15 years in state prison after a drunk-driving crash killed two passengers in Franklin Township, New Jersey, on August 27, 2023.
The 31-year-old was sentenced for first-degree vehicular homicide by Somerset County Superior Court Judge Jonathan Romankow. He received two concurrent 15-year sentences for the deaths of Carlos Perez-Gaytan, 24, and Victor Cabrera-Francisco, 20.

Additionally, Amitoj Oberoi was sentenced for driving while intoxicated and will serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
The crash occurred when Amitoj, driving a 2007 Audi Q7 at high speed, lost control and struck multiple objects, including trees and a utility pole.

Perez-Gaytan was ejected and died on the scene, while Cabrera-Francisco was trapped in the wreckage and later pronounced dead. A third passenger got minor injuries and survived, while Amitoj was hospitalized.
Amitoj Oberoi pleaded guilty in June 2024. His sentencing follows a series of high-profile cases involving DUI accidents and has raised concerns about the accountability of law enforcement officers in such situations.

He was suspended from the Edison Police Department and is expected to serve his full term under strict conditions.
