Indian Olympic Star Archana Kamath Quits Table Tennis To Pursue Economics!

Archana Kamath

When people found out that Saurabh Netravalkar of the US cricket team also has a full time job at a tech company, they were more than shocked. It is a general notion that to make a career in sports, you need to sacrifice a lot of other things. This notion holds true in most cases and unlike Netravalkar, most of the athletes have to decide between the two and pick one.

Indian table tennis star Archana Kamath has made one such tough decision and she is going to say goodbye to one. Kamath has decided to quit table tennis for a career in economics. She is going to pursue a degree in economics from the University of Michigan.

Although the tennis star made it clear that the decision has nothing to do with financial issues, netizens are divided and some of them believe that we failed the system. Kamath is only 24 and she helped the Indian team reach the quarter finals at the Paris Olympics, a first of its kind achievement.

The reason behind her decision could be personal but it has forced us to ask if we still consider academics a more rewarding pursuit. If someone who has achieved success at the Olympics level has to make such a decision then we definitely need to reflect on how we see sports in this country. On the other hand, it is also possible that she is quitting the sport to follow a pursuit she’s passionate about. In either of the cases, we should and we must respect her decision.
