Paul Scholes has claimed that Manchester United’s performance in their Premier League opener against Fulham wasn’t an improvement on last season.
United secured a 1-0 win at Old Trafford, with new signing Joshua Zirkzee scoring the only goal of the game in the 87th minute.
However, United legend Scholes wasn’t especially impressed with the way in which Erik ten Hag‘s side performed.
United showed a lack of consistency last season and finished in eighth place in the Premier League.
However, Scholes suggested that United need to step things up.

According to Scholes, United were too attack-minded against Fulham and left too much space in midfield.
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, Scholes said: ‘With Manchester United‘s opening game against Fulham, I didn’t see many differences from their performances last season. I thought they did okay, and they deserved to win the game, but there were still plenty of times where there were loads of space in central midfield.
‘The problem with United is that every time they have the ball, they are trying to attack, which isn’t a good thing.
Joshua Zirkzee scored late on but Scholes suggested United left too much space in midfield
‘You sometimes need five minutes on the ball to help take the sting out of the game, but constantly attacking, results in end-to-end football. If you look at Manchester City and their midfield, they take the sting out of the play and kill opposition teams that way, but with United, there is so much chaos with players running everywhere.’
United have been heavily active in the transfer market this summer as they look to improve their squad.
As well as Zirkzee, United have also brought in defenders Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.
Leny Yoro arrived from Lille but suffered a fractured metatarsal.
Ten Hag’s side are back in action on Saturday when they face Brighton away.
