Not Maldives, Australia is India’s New Fav

It was not long ago that the relations between India and Maldives turned sour over some negative remarks from Maldives’ ministers about India and Prime Minister Narender Modi. Netizens also voiced their disdain over social media as “Boycott Maldives” was trending in India. As a result, Maldives saw a decline in the number of Indian tourists. After months, the effect of the diplomatic row is still felt as the Maldives is no longer the destination for vacation for Indians.

Instead, Australia has become a major hub for tourists. Sydney, specifically, saw a boom in tourism from India. This is a result of new direct flights from India to New South Wales (NSW) and trouble-free visa approval through online applications.

In 2023, 1,81,600 tourists from India traveled to the land down under. These numbers are on the up this year as well. Samar Choksi, the Destination NSW Country Manager told PTI the official numbers are expected to grow in double digits this year.

On the other hand, Maldives saw a 40% decline in tourism after the controversy with India. Recently Maldives Tourism Minister, Ibrahim Faisal visited India for the “Welcome India” initiative to attract Indians back to their country. There were roadshows held in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore as a part of this initiative launched by the Maldives Government.
