Dr. Ishwari Prasad, an 84-year-old Indian-American gastroenterologist from Florida, is facing disciplinary action after two troubling colonoscopy procedures.
One incident involved a patient who screamed in pain during the procedure, but Dr. Ishwari Prasad did not respond because he wasn’t wearing his hearing aids.

This happened on June 5 at the Tampa Ambulatory Surgery Center when Dr. Prasad began the colonoscopy before the patient was fully sedated, leading to severe discomfort.
The patient’s cries went unheard, and the procedure continued despite the clear distress.

In addition to the sedation oversight, Dr. Prasad also delegated important medical tasks to an unlicensed surgical technician during another procedure.
The technician, who lacked proper training, was directed to insert and manipulate the colonoscope and even remove polyps.

These tasks are typically reserved for licensed medical professionals, but the technician was handling them due to Dr. Ishwari Prasad’s inability to perform them effectively himself.
As a result of these errors, the Florida Board of Medicine has placed Dr. Prasad on probation. He has been fined $7,500 and ordered to pay $6,301 in additional case costs.
Furthermore, he must complete a five-hour medical ethics course. Until he demonstrates competency by successfully performing 10 supervised procedures, Dr. Prasad is prohibited from carrying out any medical procedures independently.
The fact that Ishwari Prasad, despite his age and hearing impairment, was still allowed to practice raises significant concerns about medical oversight and patient safety.
How are such aged doctors, out of greed to earn money, still permitted to practice medicine?
